Create a Salesforce Report to Evaluate A/B Tests of Online Donation Forms for New and Existing Donors

by Tim Forbes on February 27, 2018
Tags:online fundraising, Rafi Hoq, Reports and Dashboards, Salesforce, Salesforce How Tos, Salesforce Nonprofit Success Pack, Tim Forbes, website CRM integration

Want more Salesforce fundraising insights? Check out our PUB Crawl newsletter to get them delivered straight to your inbox.

A/B testing of your online donation forms can be a powerful practice for optimizing their performance and maximizing the funds your nonprofit raises online. Analyzing relative conversion rates for your A/B tests within a tool like Google Analytics is just the beginning of the insights you can gain in your A/B tests, though. By integrating your A/B test with the Salesforce Nonprofit Success Pack, you can move beyond simple conversion analysis and compare performance across a host of metrics.

In this step-by-step recipe, we'll create a report and dashboards in Salesforce that will allow you to quickly see which form in your A/B test is performing best with respect to new vs. existing donors. For more background, a host of other metrics, and specifics on the A/B testing process, watch our webinar, Six Ways to Get Smarter with Your 2018 Fundraising.

As I pull myself together after celebrating the US men's curling team gold medal run, I've realized that there's been a ton happening in the Salesforce world. But seriously, did you see that comeback? Incredible!

Meanwhile, I thought for a second that I'd aim to break some speed records skiing down this mountain last week, but reason took over really quickly. Après-ski called instead.

As the sun rises over the City by the Bay, I'm waking up to another day realizing that my dream of hurtling down a tube of ice still is left unfulfilled. I'm blaming outward-pointing feet for that.

Sunrise in SF

At the same time, its Valentine's Day week here in San Francisco and the rest of the US. So, a little shout-out to the open source supporters in the NPSP Day, Power of Us Hub, and of course, the PUB Crawl subscriber community. Your energy and generosity keeps our non-profit community moving forward successfully. Much love to you.

As you dive into this week’s PUB Crawl, consider what you love most about the HUB or the Salesforce community. Maybe even share a virtual hug of support in the HUB. Then, grab a warm morning beverage and enjoy this week’s content roundup!

For those who cheered for "sports!" (and maybe "commercials!") last night, let me bring you up to speed on the action from last night's Super Bowl. Justin Timberlake dressed like a hipster hunter, one kid summarized our world's use of smartphones, and the birds defeated the revolutionaries.

Football

With that cultural summary behind us, put your laptop on that empty pizza box (which can now be recycled in my home city of DC!), and walk through Salesforce knowledge sharing with me in this week's PUB Crawl!

Track Online Donation Form A/B Test Results with Salesforce Campaign Hierarchies

by Tim Forbes on February 03, 2018
Tags:online fundraising, Salesforce, Salesforce How Tos, Salesforce Nonprofit Success Pack, Tim Forbes, website CRM integration

With the significant changes to the U.S. tax system fostering predictions of a fall in charitable donations in 2018, it is critical that nonprofit fundraisers get the absolute most out of all of their fundraising activities. This includes maximizing the effectiveness of your online donation pages. One way to get smart, actionable data about your online fundraising efforts is to do A/B testing.

In this how-to recipe, we walk through steps for utilizing Campaign Hierarchies in Salesforce to evaluate A/B tests of your online donations form. This recipe focuses on two metrics: number of donations and total amount donated. For eleven more metrics addressing recurring donations, new donors, and more plus details on creating the A/B tests themselves, watch our free webinar, Six Ways to Get Smarter with Your 2018 Fundraising.

PUB Crawl for January 29, 2018

While I'm still working on my New Year's resolutions, it seems that 2018 has decided to come racing out of the gates. One of my first goals was to spread the NPSP Day tour to more communities. My second: remembering who shot JR Ewing. Luckily, I achieved both at NPSP Day Dallas last week. Okay, maybe just the first one.

NPSP Day Dallas 2018

With 18 more NPSP Days planned for the year, I have a feeling it’s going to be wheels up / wheels down lifestyle for me in 2018. Now if only there was a "deliver burrito" button above my seat.

Another Monday means another week of nonprofit goodness and Salesforce knowledge sharing. Start your week with a dose of knowledge from the community and possibly, a coffee with a stroopwafel.

Conversion rates (aka response rates) are the holy grail in fundraising metric tracking. Getting at this elusive figure can give you incredibly valuable insight into how much your appeal, well, appeals to donors. The calculation is simple, yet determining the true tactic behind the conversion can be more challenging.

For those of you who can't join us in Dallas, don't worry, there's plenty of opportunities to engage with the community in 2018. First, our team's very own Tim Forbes is hosting an important webinar on Thursday to help fundraisers prepare for the massive change likely coming our way with the new US tax law changes. Second, this Friday you can give a big virtual hug to fellow community members in the second non-profit HUB Office hours for 2018. Then, you can take a look at the growing list of cities announced for the planned 18 NPSP Days scheduled on 4 continents this year.

Today, those of us in the US (and many around the world) celebrate the legacy of Dr Martin Luther King Jr with a day of service to our communities. It's incredible to see the contributions made by members of our non-profit community as we leverage our skills to move us towards a more just world.

As you read through this edition of the PUB Crawl, consider your gifts and talents and how they could be contributed to our community in the spirit of service. Each moment we take for each other, the better chance we have to reach the type of world Dr King believed we could create together.

Inside the friendly confines of the Soapbox Engage headquarters, we're thinking of warmer places right now as the NPSP Day calendar fills up. This year, we're adding two new continents to the tour, spreading the spirit of the open source NPSP community down to our friends in the southern hemisphere. The New Tax Law and Smart Nonprofit Fundraising in 2018

by Marisa Taylor on January 02, 2018
Tags:Marisa Taylor, nonprofit tech news, online fundraising, Tim Forbes

Donor Journey 2018

As the clock struck midnight on New Year’s Eve, we ushered in not only a new year but a new tax code that reshapes our economy in fundamental ways. With the doubling of the standard deduction to $12,000 for individuals and $24,000 for married couples, estimates project that as few as 10% of taxpayers will continue to itemize. This marked decrease means that donating to your nonprofit just got more expensive for most of your supporters since doing so won’t carry a tax benefit. Experts predict this to cause a drop in charitable donations of around $14 billion in 2018, or 5 percent of the $282 billion that nonprofits raised in 2016.

Key to responding to this changing charitable landscape is recognizing a fundamental fact: fundraising is primarily about a relationship. That relationship isn’t with the Internal Revenue Service. The key relationship is between your donor and your organization and its mission. Understanding that relationship and how it changes over time as your supporter moves through their donor journey is more critical now than ever.

But how?

Good morning friends (as I write this at 10pm ET)! For those of you just waking up from a long night/day's sleep, I just wanted to provide a few quick updates. First, 2017 really did happen. All that stuff. Yep, it happened. Second, I'm here to help you get focused on the road ahead.

Somewhere between your stack of thank you's in your outbox and the resolutions in your inbox, is the faint memory of all the awesomeness that we saw in the Salesforce community in 2017. Allow me to give you a quick synopsis: this community rocked it! Multiple community sprints, 14 NPSP Days, 25+ NPSP software releases, more Power of Us Hub posts than I can count, and a ton more.

Considering all that we've accomplished together in 2017, I have a feeling 2018 is going to be record breaking year for this community. Let's catch up on what you missed during the end-of-year craziness with a roundup from last week's knowledge.

PUB Crawl for December 18, 2017

Tags:PUB Crawl, Ryan Ozimek, Salesforce, Salesforce for Nonprofits, Salesforce Nonprofit Success Pack

Well, the good news is that we all survived the annual holiday party at Soapbox Engage's international headquarters in DC (penguins included). The bad news is that I still have stomach aches from the pounds of homemade cookies I ate (alas, no burritos!).

All that sugar rush has given us quite the Salesforce knowledge push though, with two new certifications under our collective belts and a brand new Trailhead Ranger among us. Of course, every ranger needs a sidekick, so we're lucky to have one of those in the Soapbox Engage family, too!

Adorable training buddies

Since many of you are now hibernating in your warm offices, push aside the holiday fruitcake or yummy sufganiyah and let's get focused on some Salesforce knowledge. It's PUB Crawl time!

I just wanted the stuffed bear. Now, I'm a Trailhead Ranger and Salesforce Certified.

Trailhead Ranger and Salesforce Certified

Late Wednesday evening of Dreamforce, I wandered into Moscone West with a distinct purpose: secure Codey, the stuffed bear, to give to my 15-month-old son upon my return home. In the process of tackling the three tasks required to win said bear, I ended up creating a brand new Trailhead account and was instantly hooked on the training opportunities it offered.

Within a month, my Dreamforce-born obsession spurred me to reach the highest Trailhead rank of Ranger and pass the Salesforce Administrator certification exam.

1/10/2018 UPDATE: My son is a month older - and I am an additional certification deeper into my Trailblazer journey after passing the Salesforce Certified Platform App Builder today.

1/19/2018 UPDATE: Just passed the Salesforce Advanced Administrator certification. Trailhead, ho!

12/26/2018 UPDATE: And Salesforce Nonprofit Cloud Consultant certification makes four!

Here are eight observations about my journey for others interested in going from gamified Salesforce learning to real-world certification:
